What Do You Do When the Doorbell Rings?

How to cope when the comfort of your routine is shattered.

Embracing the Unexpected: The Power of Handling Interruptions

Picture this: It’s a tranquil Tuesday. You’re in your zone. You’re vibing with the universe, your consciousness humming in sync with your favorite meditation app. And then… DING DONG! The doorbell yanks you back to reality. So much for tranquility. Ever felt bombarded by interruptions at home or work? Join the club. The result is an emotional roller coaster that could send even the most composed of us into a spin. Your peaceful routine? Shattered. Your calm bubble? Popped. Your solitude? Invaded. And all for what? A package that could’ve just been left at your doorstep? Let’s face it, handling interruptions is a part of life.

Understanding and Overcoming the Challenge of Handling Interruptions

An interruption can send even the most composed of us into a mini crisis. It’s bonkers how even small interruptions can get our hearts racing faster than a high-intensity workout. All roads lead to one thing: handling interruptions. I know. I know. We. Hate. Interruptions. It’s even trickier in this digital world where we’re peppered non-stop with notifications, emails, texts, and calls.

However, I want to share a gem from my corporate odyssey with you: life is sprinkled generously with out-of-nowhere interruptions. These unexpected nudges serve as the beat to our daily rhythm, reminding us that life is all about adaptability.

Keys to Handling Interruptions at Work and Beyond

Ever been so deep in a design project that the colors start to blend, and the lines blur? You feel stuck. Then, boom! A text, a slack message, your dog whining, and suddenly, you’re jolted out of your flow. An interruption. A break in the monotony. When you return to your project post-break you might notice some things you didn’t before. Solutions might even start popping up where problems once loomed. The secret is to see interruptions not as foes, but friends. They’re unexpected visitors on your journey. They force a pause in your daily script. And we can use these pauses to reassess, realign, and reevaluate.

But, how do you keep your sanity from spiraling into chaos? And how do you stop your avocado toast from doing somersaults every time you get interrupted)? Breathe. Laugh. Remember, it’s just a doorbell, not an alien invasion (honestly, welcome alien friends, please cure us of capitalism). So what do you do? Face the interruption, the anxiety, and realize it’s not as massive as you imagined.

Drawing from my corporate and creative journey, here are some real-world tips to help you smoothly navigate these interruptions:

  1. Embrace Interruptions: View them as part of life’s ebb and flow. Instead of disruptions, see them as invitations to take a short break from your task.
  2. Create an ‘Interruption Plan’: Have a ready strategy. It could be as simple as noting down your last thought or marking your place in a project before attending to the interruption. (A great example of this belongs to a stranger on the internet: When interruptions happen in person, try walking your coworker back to their desk with a kind demeanor to ensure a focused conversation.)
  3. Practice Mindfulness: A quick meditation or a few deep breaths can help keep you calm and focused amidst interruptions.
  4. Set Boundaries: Designate clear ‘Do Not Disturb’ times for uninterrupted work. Share these times with your colleagues, or if you’re working from home, with your family or roommates. Also remember, you don’t have to answer the damn door. You really don’t.
  5. Use Tech to Your Advantage: Leverage productivity tools and apps to help manage interruptions and maintain focus. Use AI to help you set up a workflow process so that you have something to anchor you back when you’re ready.

So, next time that doorbell rings, or your phone dings, or your coworkers pop by, or your dog needs to go out…don’t let it shake you. See it as a reality check, a little “ding-dong, remember me?” from life. And who knows, it might just be the delivery of that Lululemon yoga mat you forgot you splurged on. See, everything is fiiiiine.
